I would say that lightning is basically right in the sense that the more the actuator is parallel to the door, the worse it is.
I think of the system adopted for the opening/closing of the jackets of the submarines that, despite the weight, open and close almost effortlessly (in this case the actuator is rotative and is a big spring).
