a test scene with vray I don't have it because I use mr. but I remember that on 32-bit system, 2 gb ram a scene at 2500-3000 pixels with 4-5 xfrog trees gave me out of memory on mental ray.

....the memory for renderings is a very limiting fact. ..say that 6/8 giga of ram ensure to get to the bottom of many works..but not all...use the vegetation is always a problem,. even with the scatters or with an excellent alternative like xfrog.. or similar, as they need so much memory....the laptop I still do decent interiors... it's obvious that a laptop can't be a choice for a maker, it's okay if you make renderings every now and then... or still not very complex! !

with an fx picture, you can lose iray. You should study a little before you spend money uselessly. What does the ram do with the rendering? for calculation the cpu or gpu is used. mr uses the first, iray the second. You want to use iray? change video card! but know well how to mount, according to your motherboard

I think we're not here. the picture are excellent for viewport but in the rendering gpu remain slower than the gtx, unless you go on painting 5000/6000. at the same price of 2000, but with double core cuda, find this

I need to make discrete renders using irays, and I hope with gtx 580 not to have that unwanted gear effect.
with the fx580 I launched a render for 2 hours and the render always appeared with a background disorder.
