I use the linked option instead of importing all geometries, once saved the file becomes lighter, so there is also the possibility to update the linked file in addition to the ability to manage (load or not) the various parts or sub-axis of the step.
doing so I can import even 100-200 mb files, it certainly puts us a little to the first import.

I personally use another system especially for large files.
or via the "stepin" command typed by autocad-mechanical .... the import speed is incredible!
at this point (species for layout management) gates everything I don't need, then there is the possibility to further simplify using the usual Boolean operators of "somma".
Finally I re-export everything and embroidery from inventor.
